In two workshops conducted in Jordan and Lebanon on 8-13 December 2009, more than 50 young liberals were trained in FNF workshops by Mr Frederik Ferié, an expert on political marketing and currently Secretary General of the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY).

In Amman, the workshop targeted young members of the Free Thought Forum, one of FNF’s key partner organisations in Jordan which aims at activating the participation of citizens in political life and to enhance the values of democratic society through civic education and awareness. fredrik_3.jpg
In Lebanon, the workshop comprised the youth of FNF’s main political partners in the country, notably the youth wings of the National Liberal Party, NLP, and the Future Movement (Future Youth being a full member and the NLP youth having candidate status with IFLRY.)

The training introduced the participants to the values, principles and concepts of liberalism and presented them with the role and function of structured programmes for political parties. In country-specific elements of the workshops, participants discussed potential liberal solutions to current political problems in Jordan and Lebanon respectively. Moreover, an international trade simulation provided the groups with practical experience of the effects of economic concepts.

jord_dead_sea.jpgBoth workshops took place outside the hectic capitals of Amman and Beirut – in a  retreat-like atmosphere at the Dead Sea in Jordan and in the mountains of Broummana in Lebanon. Ralf Erbel, FNF Resident Representative in Jordan and for Lebanon was delighted about the quality of discussions in the workshops: “Working with the youth in our project countries in the realms of civic education and the promotion of liberalism is among our most important tasks as a political foundation. It is heartening to witness the dedication of the young professionals in these workshops.” FNF was committed, Mr Erbel continued, to building on these workshops and look into possibilities for follow-up activities in Jordan and Lebanon in 2010.
