The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty (FNF) - Amman Office
Since 1981, the Amman Office of FNF, together with its partners in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq, has implemented many activities that underline the principles of liberalism. Especially since 1997, it has been supporting activities with NGOs, governmental bodies, business associations, and international organisations.
Working together with liberal forces in Jordan such as the Free Thought Forum, the Young Entrepreneurs Association and many others, FNF contributes to finding liberal solutions for the country’s socio-economic problems and enhancing civic and youth participation in politics.
Economic freedom is perceived as a key to economic prosperity and growth. The cornerstones of economic freedom are personal choice, voluntary exchange, freedom to compete, and security of privately owned property. Today more than ever, the world including the MENA needs policies that lead to economic prosperity and job creation. The first step toward improvement is an objective measurement of those policies which create wealth. FNF works with like-minded liberal institutions and individuals from the Arab world and beyond on creating an Arab network for the promotion of economic freedom in this region.
As of 2002 FNF has also been active in Syria conducting training programmes for human rights and civil society organizations. The focus has been on rights and responsibilities of citizens, promoting awareness of human rights and building the capacities of organisations working in such fields.
Through cooperation with different players in Lebanon, FNF aims at contributing to building a state of law through fighting corruption, promoting good governance principles and participation in local politics. Together, with the Lebanese Economic Association (LEA) it aims at creating reform plans for economic liberalization.
In 2005 FNF started working with Iraqi political decision-makers supporting them with legal consultancy during the constitution drafting process. Within this framework FNF will also provide a platform for national dialogue in order to contribute to a prosperous and peaceful Iraq.
2007 was also the beginning of an EU co financed regional project on “Enhancing legal framework of associations through national dialogue and empowerment of civil society” implemented by FNF and its partners in the region. This projects aims at strengthening democratic practices through creating common and democratic standards for laws regulating political parties, NGOs and labour union and improving CSOs‘ performance and image through the adoption of internal good governance principles.
